A defence minister has stated that the MoD is currently examining the possible threats posed by Chinese-made vehicles, and personnel have been told to avoid talking about classified matters in all cars.
Safety Advice for MoD Staff
During a recently aired appearance on a radio station, Luke Pollard commented on claims that Ministry of Defence officials have been instructed not to talk about classified material while riding in China-made cars.
The minister explained that the MoD is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, however emphasised that security is a concern in every modern vehicles.
Our department has a collection of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles represent a very small number.
But whether you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our people is not to plug MoD technology into their car, not to have discussions at a secret classification in any vehicle, because of the growing risks of surveillance that exist in every single vehicle, to only have those confidential conversations in secure locations. That’s a wise and sensible thing for everyone worried about safety.
When it was put to him that it would be prudent for the ministry to cease using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”

The revelation comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the UK to the existence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could allow China to switch off public transport and cause chaos to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russia spy ship was reportedly directing laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, described as a “highly dangerous” action by defence officials.
