EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says
The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
